An inner-city vertical setting pushes boundaries in design, MPA was engaged by Froebel as they set about reimaging a new generation of early childhood education and care services.
Froebel Early Learning Centre
Froebel engaged MPA to construct their Carlton-based Early Learning Centre located at University of Melbourne’s most innovative and sustainable precincts, Melbourne Connect. The centre was Australia’s very first ‘vertical’ Early Learning Centre that caters just over 90 children across three levels.
Based within an engineered timber (CLT) building, MPA built segregated areas to accommodate different learning stages and age groups ranging from six months to five years.
The centre includes interactive spaces such as the Wonder Wall, Kibble Baths as well as Sensory Boards. In addition to this, the centre also offers a chef’s kitchen that can cater to any dietary requirements the children may have, a Private Parent Lounge, as well as a rooftop playground.
The incredible joinery is typical to Froebel’s iconic design that showcases parametric blades with waffle cavities.
Additionally, a German imported stainless steel slide was craned over five levels to the rooftop playground under MPA’s stringent safety guidelines.
The project encountered several hurdles that MPA were quick to resolve. This included clients being confined interstate due to covid restrictions, which was managed by frequent and consistent communication.
